In an effort to create natural space and openness within a room, eliminating items from available floor space and elevating storage is always an effective move. If you’re stuck on where to begin, installing shelving units is one great way to implement this method. Not only do shelves offer abundant storage solutions for items otherwise likely left lying around, they can add a unique aesthetic appeal to your interior if styled effectively. If you’re considering adding this element to a space, here are some things to keep in mind:

1. Fluctuate book placement- If you’re styling a book shelf in someone’s home office for example, try not to arrange all the books in a vertical pattern as if you’re restocking library shelves. To add more visual alteration, lay some horizontally in stacks as well as a way to disrupt the monotony with something a bit more decorative and interesting.

2. Add objects- When acting ornamentally, bookshelves should be home to more than just books. Think small sculptures, globes, candles, or decorative clocks.

3. Go green- Adding an element of plant life is always an effective way to bring some earthy character into any interior design. Especially in juxtaposition with books and similarly indoorsy features, an accent of green vibrancy can go a long way in bringing energy into a client’s home.

4. Present personality- In coordinating appropriate accent pieces to implement in addition to books and various décor, try to work with your clients in developing a sense of their personal style and tastes, and then decorate accordingly. Are you tailoring a shelving unit in the studio apartment of a retired athlete? Framing some prints of old sports action shots could add a unique element of persona to the space. The more you’re able to transpose the character of your client into the space around them, the more at home they’re likely to feel.
