When you’re planning a new furniture layout for a room, it’s important to consider the individual shape of each piece in relation to the shape of the given walls and space it will fill. Many amateur designers struggle to establish a nice aesthetic balance within a room simply because they aren’t following these few basic rules of furniture to wall shape cohesion.
As a general rule, any object arranged in a given space should be placed in such a way to create spacial balance with the walls. If you follow these two simple guidelines, this equilibrium will more effectively maintained, and the look of the room will seem more cohesive overall.
- Don’t place rectangular furniture at an angle to a straight wall. This creates an awkward visual disturbance and will make the room seem off-kilter.
- If you’re hanging an object (a painting, a mirror), try to make sure said object’s space corresponds to the shape of the wall. If the wall is horizontal, a horizontal shape is best. If the wall is vertical, a vertical shape is best. If the wall is square, a square shape looks good, and a round shape could work as well.
