As a professional wedding planner, it’s important to develop a sharp eye for quality. Especially when helping a bride make a gown purchase, you’ll need to know exactly what to look for when it comes to finding flaws. When making your initial garment evaluation, here are 5 basics to keep an eye on:
- Seams. The seams should always be smooth with evenly matched fabric on either side, joined by tight stitching. If you see exposed needle marks or dangling threads, put it back.
- Linings. All linings need to be heavy enough to cover mid-layers, inner seams and undergarments.
- Zippers. All zippers should be hand-sewn on a wedding gown. If the bride selects a dress with back buttons, there should also be a small zipper underneath said buttons in order to ensure a secure fit.
- Buttons, Loops, and Hooks. If a gown’s buttons are made of cloth, said cloth should be made of the same fabric as the rest of the dress. The buttons’ fastening loops should always be sizable enough for the buttons to slide through comfortably but securely. Extra hooks and eyes should also be sewn in to reinforce any stress points.
- Beads and Lace. Beads and lace appliqués must be completely secure. For the absolute best quality, always check to see that all pearls and beads are individually stitched onto the dress.
